The Mom Guilt Struggle Is Real: 6 Ways To Deal With It



There are still some days I feel guilty for:

  • doing too much for my kids

  • not doing enough for my kids

  • working full-time

  • wanting alone time

The list goes on, depending on the day of the week & the season of parenting.

The mom guilt struggle is real. There's always something that you feel like you're not doing enough of or could be doing better. If you're also feeling the mom guilt struggle, know that you're not alone. I hope these 6 tips help. 💝

1. Acknowledge your feelings: The first step in dealing with mom guilt is to simply acknowledge the feelings. Don't try to stuff them down with wine or cookies. Your feelings are valid. Recognize that you are doing the best you can at this moment. Take a deep breath and move forward.


2. Talk with other moms: Get together, have some laughs (and snacks, of course), & commiserate. It's so helpful to know you're not the only one going through yet another rough patch (daycare guilt, middle school back talk, high school pushing curfew time). Plus, a mom with older kids always has great tips & advice.


3. Take a break & BE: If you're feeling overwhelmed, step away from your responsibilities and do something just for YOU. Read a book, go for a walk, or sit for a few minutes and listen to your favorite song. I also encourage you to schedule time for yourself on a regular basis in order to relax and rejuvenate. Happy mom, happy family.


4. Ask for help: Trying to do everything yourself is a recipe for disaster. Delegate some chores & calendar events to your spouse, family members (grandpas love to watch sports practices), & your older kids (tip: they can put this on their college applications!) Sometimes this may mean takeout instead of a home-cooked meal; they will be fine. My boys were always excited for a random Tuesday night "carpet picnic."


5. Listen to your intuition: We can get so caught up in the rat race that we forget what our children (& ourselves) truly need: safety, love, & attention. What does this look like in your family? Take a few moments to sit quietly and listen to your intuition/gut. I bet it’s not telling you to find that perfect InstaPot recipe or make a Pinterest board for your kid’s birthday party.


6. Give yourself grace: I saved the most important one for last. Cut yourself some slack. Parenting is the hardest, longest (17+ years), and most rewarding job I've ever had. I promise everyone will be okay when you put down the guilt, ask for what you need, & let the loving & fulfilled mom you are shine through.


P.S. Kids who can whip up a homecooked meal & know how to clean a bathroom will make great future college roommates & partners 😉
